Manchester United have made a shock move for Real Madrid star Mesut Özil, according to the Daily Mail.

United missed out on the German international’s signature last summer with Özil moving to Real in a £12 million deal after shining in the World Cup. He enjoyed a hugely successful debut season in the Spanish capital providing 25 assists and 10 goals in 53 appearances.

United are in the hunt for a replacement for the retired Paul Scholes and believe the 22-year old’s attributes make him a fine candidate.

Inter Milan’s Wesley Sneijder, Tottenham’s Luka Modric and Arsenal’s Samir Nasri had initially topped Ferguson’s shopping list but the United manager is yet to make a move for any of the three.

Özil is not the only player to have been linked with a move away from Real this summer. Kaka has been linked with a return to Italy after a disappointing two seasons whilst Manchester City apparently planned an audacious £150 million move for top scorer and ex-United player Cristiano Ronaldo.
